It’s July, and the durian season is still upon us!
This is the only time for you to get fresh, extremely delicious durians, rather than those genetically-engineered ones.
We probably have until mid of August to enjoy the awesomeness of the King of Fruits, so here are some different ways you can eat durian if you want to change it up a little:
1. Durian sticky rice + salt water
Cook rice in a pot of coconut milk, and stir in durian flesh. The taste of sweet rice with custard-like chunks of durian will certainly make you fall in love with this fruit all over again.
Pro tip: Sprinkle salt water and sugar on top for a truly gastronomical experience!
2. Grilled durian
This delightful twist will send your tastebuds into overdrive with its unique and fabulous taste. Roast a whole durian carefully on each side, and you will get a sweet and warm flesh that melts in your mouth.
3. Durian sandwich
Durian, spread in a sandwich panini? Sounds like a treat. On low heat, warm some durian flesh and a splash of milk in a pan. Let this puree cool before spreading it on wholemeal bread for a delicious snack that will leave you wanting more.
4. Durian porridge
Use the sweet and savoury flavours of durian to elevate the taste of soups or curries. Aside from adding sweetness to every spoonful, durian also enhances the richness of the broth. Plus, you get a yummy and warm seed of durian to munch on during your meal.
5. Durian smoothie
Use the finger-licking flesh of the durian in your next smoothie. Because durian has a rich flavour, blend just 1/2 cup of durian flesh with 1/2 cup of milk. This smoothie will satisfy your sweet tooth as milk complements the custard-like texture of the durian perfectly.
6. Durian dalgona coffee
In a blender, mix 1/4 cup of durian flesh with 1/2 cup black coffee. No milk is required as the creamy consistency of the durian lends its milky taste to your cup of joe.
7. Durian Steamboat
Last but not last, this is one unique durian dish that you should try if you’re a true durian lover. The durian aroma mixes well with the flavourful chicken soup, peppered with carrots, mushrooms and sweet dates.
