8 Tasty Ways To Enjoy Seaweed (Aside From Sushi)

When you think of seaweed, you’ll immediately be reminded of Japanese food such as sushi.

It’s a delicious, low-cal way to add a boost of nutrients to your day. Plus, since it’s packed with vitamins from A to zinc, this underwater veggie makes every dish a total ~splash~

However, do you know that there are many other ways to enjoy the delectable savoury snack? Here are a few quick ideas:

1. Add to toast

Crumble dried seaweed on top of your toast for a subtle flavour and make it a more satisfying meal by adding cheese, smoked salmon, smashed avocado, or hummus.

2. Make it as sandwich

Take four sheets of seaweed and wrap your favourite toppings such as rice, cucumber, sauce and anything else your taste buds desire! You can also add dried seaweed into the sandwich for extra crunch.

3. Mini seaweed wraps (or sliders)

Slice a cucumber very thin and use the pieces as wraps for broken-up seaweed sheets and a creamy spread like avocado or a homemade sesame dressing.

4. Pair with avocado

Cut an avocado in half and scoop out the pit. Top half with a sprinkle of crumbled dried seaweed, a squirt of lemon juice, and a teaspoon of sesame seeds. 

5. Seaweed Omelette

Who doesn’t love omelettes? It’s delicious for breakfast on its own, lunch in a bento box or dinner over rice. By pairing it with seaweed, rolled into the middle, it will give this egg dish a crunchy bite. Add some mushrooms for a bump of flavour!

6. Seaweed Hot Dog

This hot dog is based on a dog served at a restaurant and food cart in Vancouver. If you can’t make it over there to try this hot dog, it’s easy to make at home.

Just combine teriyaki sauce and mayonnaise with a seaweed topping. It’s like taking a bite out of vacation.

5 May 2020 Day 42 in quarantine! Sea lettuce – Ulva Lactuca The best way to dry sea lettuce is DON’T RINSE WITH FRESH WATER. The salt helps preserve it. Rinse it really well in the sea to get all the sand off. You can harvest sea lettuce with the help of a sharp knife, taking care not to damage the holdfast that attaches it. This way, it will quickly re-grow and your impact will be minimal. As with all foraging, never take the first one@you see, take little here and a little there, not too much from any one place. It’s the first time I’ve harvested sea lettuce. I paddle over with the kids to the little uninhabited island across from the harbour where I harvest the sea lettuce in the mangroves while kids go climbing the mangroves. The first batch of sea lettuce I harvested, I rinsed with fresh water and dried it. This batch has a bitter aftertaste. The second batch which I didn’t rinse doesn’t have this. -Sea Lettuce Popcorn (or other dried seaweed) 1/4 cup of corn kernels 1/2 cup dried and crumbled sea lettuce Mix liquids really well: 1 tbs oil 1 tbs soy sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 1 tsp rice vinegar Make popcorn in a 2 liter pot. Pour liquid mix over hot popcorn and toss in the sea lettuce -Sea lettuce gomasio Blend together or grind with mortar and pestle; a big handful of dried sea lettuce with – half a cup of roasted sesame seeds. The amounts are very flexible.
