Last week, a 25-year-old woman in Terengganu, Malaysia has unfortunately passed away after consuming a viral pudding she purchased online, called Puding Buih (Bubble Pudding).
Upon examination, experts concluded that the eggs used in the puddings have expired for over two weeks, causing 99 customers to be hospitalized around the same time.
What’s worse, the Puding Buih is actually made with raw eggs. No baking needed!
The Float Test
Therefore, in order for you to avoid food poisoning, an easy way for you to check whether an egg is fresh or not is by doing the float test.
Method: Gently set your egg into a bowl or bucket of water.
Result: If the egg sinks, it is fresh. If it tilts upwards or even floats, it is old.
This is because as an egg ages, the small air pocket inside it grows larger as water is released and replaced by air. If the air pocket becomes large enough, the egg may float.
Better be safe than sorry
If you accidentally eat a bad egg, you could be in for some unpleasant stomach upset. But beyond that, there’s also the risk of getting salmonella bacteria.
When the salmonella bacteria enters your bloodstream, it can be life-threatening, especially for people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, the very young, and those with diseases.
With that said, in case you have an upset stomach, consider drinking yogurt to fix your digestive system!
The active cultures found in yogurt may increase good bacteria in the gut, which aids in digestion and reduces bloating.
